April 17, 2009, Fairbanks, AK — When the Orion Grassroots Network conducted a recent survey to determine the effectiveness of GrantStation.com among its 1,000-member organizations, it learned that 32 percent of members had successfully raised money via GrantStation.com.

"This is good news, especially since most of our members have not previously used GrantStation.com, nor any other grants database, due to lack of funds," says Erik Hoffner, Coordinator for the Orion Grassroots Network, "These organizations are small: one-half of Network groups operate on less than $250,000 annually; many members have operating budgets of less than $25,000 a year."

The Orion Grassroots Network—a diverse coalition of more than 1,000 grassroots organizations across North America and beyond—connects people at work in social benefit organizations whose missions serve people and planet. The Network is a program of The Orion Society, in Great Barrington, MA, and other programs include the bi-monthly Orion magazine, Grassroots Jobsource, Orion Education and Orion Gatherings.

The Background
In July 2007, the Orion Grassroots Network purchased a GrantStation.com membership for each of its member organizations located throughout the U.S. and numerous foreign countries. In March 2009, Hoffner contacted Cynthia Adams, CEO/President of GrantStation.com to share news that GrantStation.com memberships are making it possible for members' work to have greater impact, reach and longevity.

Hoffner says, "GrantStation.com is built for grassroots organizations trying to find their way in the world of grants. Providing a resource like GrantStation.com to Orion organizations is one of the best things we can do to help them succeed."

Cynthia Adams, CEO/President of GrantStation, said, "We've been very fortunate since we launched GrantStation in the fall of 2001. We have almost 20,000 members and over 220,000 readers who receive our weekly e-newsletter the GrantStation Insider. It has been really great to work with groups, such as Orion, helping the organizations they serve identify the right grant maker for their programs and projects."

Highlights from survey respondents:

  • "I've learned about several grants through GrantStation.com. In fact, it has become a main source of funding leads. Probably the biggest success story was a substantial grant from the NEA, which I learned about through the GrantStation Insider e-newsletter."
  • "Our organization was able to find funding via GrantStation.com to hire its first-ever executive director. Since then, he has secured multi-year funding from the same foundation. This has truly set a new course for our growing organization."
  • "GrantStation.com is an invaluable source of information for our small nonprofit, which is without a full development staff."
  • "We are so grateful for this tool, which we could not afford on our own."
  • "We have just begun doing research with Grant Station.com. It is an outstanding resource and, honestly, it is why we joined Orion. In addition, I have shared the information with other nonprofits, encouraging them to sign up. Thank you so much for making this available, especially in these difficult economic times!"
