N.C. Center for Nonprofits Becomes Newest GrantStation Partner
February 26, 2010 –The N.C. Center for Nonprofits (the Center), which serves as a statewide network for nonprofit board and staff members, an information center on effective organizational practices, and an advocate for the nonprofit sector in North Carolina, has recently become GrantStation’s newest e-newsletter partner. According to Cynthia Adams, CEO of GrantStation, the Center joins a list of over 170 international, national, regional, and state organizations that deliver GrantStation e-newsletters to their constituents.
Ms. Adams recently spoke with the Center’s Membership Director, Sarah B. Weissberg, and Jane Kendall, President of the Center.
Adams: What attracted you about offering the weekly GrantStation Insider as a new benefit for the organizations you work with?
Kendall: The Center works with all kinds of nonprofits throughout North Carolina. These organizations need a variety of resources in their toolbox, and learning more about different funding opportunities is critical. The GrantStation Insider is a great way to get this information in their hands on a regular basis.
Adams: The Center appears to offer a lot of training opportunities. Has this always been a focus? How do you determine what type of training is needed by the nonprofit sector?
Weissberg: We provide intensive training at our annual statewide conference and also offer other free-standing workshops on our own and in partnership with other groups, for example the N.C. Association of Certified Public Accountants, North Carolina chapters of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and other local and regional networks of nonprofits across the state. We determine what training is needed by asking our Members directly, keeping our fingers on the pulse of what’s happening in the nonprofit sector, and through constant interaction with our regional, local, and statewide partners.
We also offer help and information through our website and Board & Staff Helpline; pro bono consultations with attorneys, CPAs, human resources experts, and marketing professionals; 35 money-saving programs; and advocacy and public policy work.
Adams: We noticed that the Center offers a variety of webinars. Have you found this a good way to deliver information? Do you think, at some level, webinars are replacing in-person workshops?
Weissberg: Webinars are a convenient and often affordable way to access high-quality professional development, and you don’t have to leave your office! However, nothing replaces in-person workshops. During our annual Statewide Conference and Public Policy Forum we offer over 45 sessions presented by experts working in the nonprofit sector. These sessions cover all kinds of topics – fundraising, technology, human resources, legal compliance, board/staff relations, collaborations, accounting, etc. We also offer a number of other workshops throughout the year in communities across the state.
