Tracks to Success
Writing a Powerful Grant Proposal
This 13-part series will provide a step-by-step guide for developing a successful grant proposal. The series will introduce the novice grant writer to the necessary components involved in crafting a winning proposal, and will also offer the experienced grant writer some new ideas for approaching this task. The first article will include three sample grant proposals provided by IdeaEncore. Written by GrantStation's CEO, Cynthia M. International Grants for Small Nonprofits
USAID and the U.S. Department of State have several grant programs that are tailored specifically for small nonprofit organizations. Breast Cancer Education Programs Supported
Avon Breast Health Outreach Program
The mission of the Avon Breast Health Outreach Program (BHOP) is to link medically underserved women to breast health education and screening services. Grants are available to community-based organizations in the U.S., Guam, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands that are implementing a program that provides education and information on breast health and breast cancer, and helps women access medical providers. BHOP supports non-medical expenses incurred by breast cancer screening programs for the recruitment of underserved women to low-cost or free medical services. Approximately $5.2 million in grant funds will be awarded to about 125 community-based programs and/or health care agencies. The majority of the grants will range from $30,000 to $60,000, with an average of $45,000. To ensure that smaller community-based organizations receive funding, BHOP plans to award at least 40% of the grants to organizations with operating budgets under $2,000,000. BHOP will provide at least one grant in every state and two grants in every state where there is an Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The application deadline is August 27, 2010. Grants Address Death Penalty Reform
Tides Death Penalty Mobilization Fund
The Death Penalty Mobilization Fund, an initiative of the Tides Foundation, supports strategic collaborations of local, regional, or national nonprofits working to abolish the death penalty at the state and/or federal levels. The State Strategies segment of the Fund provides one- to two-year grants of $40,000 to $80,000 each year to state-based activist nonprofit organizations working on death penalty reform, abolition, or moratoria efforts in the United States. Grants can be used for organizational and/or staff capacity, campaign development or implementation, infrastructure development necessary to implement or expand campaigns, public education, and direct and grassroots lobbying. Priority will be given to states where a grant will make a significant contribution towards securing a concrete victory or strategic outcome. The application deadline for State Strategies grant applications is August 16, 2010. Visit the Tides Foundation website to review the request for proposals.

Grassroots Environmental Programs Funded
Patagonia Environmental Grants Program
The Patagonia Environmental Grants Program provides support to small, grassroots activist organizations with provocative direct-action agendas, working on multi-pronged campaigns to protect the environment. Patagonia funds local groups working to protect local habitats in the United States and Canada, as well as in targeted countries around the world. The company is most interested in supporting organizations that work on the root causes of problems and that approach issues with a commitment to long-term change. Most grants are in the range of $3,000 to $8,000. Proposals are accepted through the Patagonia website during the months of April and August each year, and must be submitted by April 30 or August 31. (Applications are accepted year-round at local retail Patagonia stores.) Visit the website listed above to take the eligibility quiz and review the program’s application guidelines.

Support for Social Justice Programs
Arca Foundation
The Arca Foundation is dedicated to the pursuit of social equity and justice, particularly given the growing disparities in the world. In the United States, the Foundation is currently interested in supporting nonprofit organizations that work to promote a more equitable, accountable, and transparent economic recovery in the current sociopolitical climate. Internationally, the Foundation considers proposals that advance policies to further normalize U.S.-Cuban relations, as well as proposals that work to foster more just policies on a range of international issues. Grants Enhance Company Communities
Ameriprise Financial Community Relations Program
The Ameriprise Financial Community Relations Program is committed to giving back to company communities throughout the United States by supporting nonprofit organizations whose shared goal is to improve the lives of individuals from all walks of life. The company's community outreach focuses on three key priorities: The Meeting Basic Needs category focuses on programs that help at-risk populations stabilize their lives and become more self-sufficient. The Supporting Community Vitality category promotes programs that build strong communities by creating economic vitality and cultural enrichment. The Volunteer Driven Causes category provides grants to nonprofit organizations where company employees, advisors, or retirees volunteer. Requests are reviewed three times per year. The upcoming deadline is September 1, 2010. Visit the company’s website to submit an online application.

Funds for Health Care Programs in South Carolina
BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation
The mission of the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation is to promote the health of South Carolinians and to expand access to health care for the economically disadvantaged by supporting integrated research, education, and community service. The Foundation's priority funding areas include: Childhood/Adolescent Health, Community Health, Health Care and Free Medical Clinics, Mental Health, Nursing Issues, Prevention of Obesity, and Research. Nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions throughout the state are eligible to apply. The upcoming deadline for letters of intent is August 18, 2010. Visit the Foundation’s website to review the priority funding areas and access the letter of intent form.

Arts Organizations in California Supported
James Irvine Foundation: Creative Connections Fund
The James Irvine Foundation's mission is to expand opportunity for the people of California to participate in a vibrant, successful, and inclusive society. The Foundation’s Creative Connections Fund supports the expansion of diverse, relevant arts and cultural offerings in local communities across California. Grants of up to $50,000 are provided to small and midsize arts organizations because of their close ties to their communities. Preference is given to arts organizations outside San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. The final application deadline for 2010 is August 6. Detailed information about the Fund’s application process is available on the Irvine Foundation’s website.

Grants Promote Affordable Housing in the East
TD Charitable Foundation: 2010 Housing for Everyone Grant Competition
The TD Charitable Foundation supports nonprofit organizations that improve the well-being of the communities served by the bank in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, DC. The Foundation’s Housing for Everyone Grant Competition provides operational funding for organizations that make a meaningful difference in the affordable housing landscape of their community. The theme of this year's competition is Capital Improvements for Affordable Housing. Funded initiatives must focus on preserving and improving housing units for low- and moderate-income families or individuals. The application deadline is September 3, 2010. Department of Education: Strengthening Institutions Program
Application deadline: August 5, 2010
This program provides support to improve and strengthen the academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability of eligible institutions in order to help them become more self-sufficient and expand their capacity to serve low-income students.

Department of Health and Human Services: Health Profession Opportunity Grants to Serve Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Recipients and Other Low-Income Individuals
Application deadline: August 5, 2010
This program provides support to projects that provide eligible individuals with education and training that will prepare them to enter and advance in the healthcare sector. Priority will be given to applications that focus on one or more healthcare sub-sectors and occupational categories, including the following: allied health, long-term care, child care health advocate training, health information technology, and nursing.

Department of Commerce: Triple Bottom Line Accounting Competition: A Method for Identifying Impacts of Economic Development Initiatives on Regional Economies
Application deadline: August 13, 2010
This program provides support to research, develop, and disseminate metrics to enable policymakers and practitioners to more effectively understand how to assess the triple bottom line (economic, environmental, and social impacts) of various economic development activities.

National Endowment for the Humanities: Picturing America School Collaboration Projects
Application deadline: October 7, 2010
This program provides support to local and regional projects that foster collaboration between K-12 teachers and humanities scholars to encourage engagement with the rich resources of American art to tell America’s story. Priority will be given to collaborative projects designed to help teachers incorporate Picturing America images into the teaching of core subjects in the following Picturing America historic themes: leadership, freedom and equality, democracy, courage, landscape, and creativity and ingenuity.

Institute of Museum and Library Services: Conservation Assessment Program
Application deadline: December 1, 2010
This program provides support for general conservation assessments of eligible museums, which consists of a broad study of museum conditions, policies, and procedures that relate to and affect collections care, including: storage and exhibition conditions, museum environment, fabrication and condition of structures housing collections, museum staffing and training, and policies and procedures concerning the use of collections.
